First Penance/First Holy Communion/ Confirmation

News
07-July-20

The sacraments of First Penance, First Holy Communion and Cofirmation will take place in August. We are very grateful to Fr Douglas for facilitating these sacraments over the summer months. However the sacraments will be subject to Covid restrictions at that time and we cannot predict how things will be then. For now we will base our handling of these sacraments on the current national arrangements regarding Covid.

Confirmation will take place on Saturday August 8 at 11am in St Nicholas of Myra church. As there will be a large group of children to be Confirmed only one parent and one sponsor will be permitted in the church along with the child. The capacity of the permitted attendance in church will be exceeded even with this arrangement in place. We undersatnd that this might not be ideal but under the circumstances it is the best solution. We had looked at splitting the class and holding it over two days but felt it best to keep the class group together for what will be their last outing in our school. We will hold the Ceremony of Light at 7pm on Tuesday August 4. This is a short ceremony and we will brief you afterwards about procedures for the Confirmation day itself. Two parents can accompany the child for this service. The children will not be wearing albs on Confirmation day. There will not be any choir but we will have some musical accompaniement. Fr Douglas will Confirm the children once the Diocese approve this. We have got the Confirmation names for each child but have not got all the baptismal certificates for children baptised outside Dunlavin/Donard parish. This must be presented prior to Confirmation. We will post out a letter with information for all families in the coming weeks.

First Penance will take place on Tuesday August 25 at 7pm in the church. Attendance is restricted to 2 parents accompanying their child. Traditionally the class would perform a short drama based on Zacchaeus but this will not happen on this occasion. First Holy Communion will take place at 11am on Saturday August 29 in St Nicholas of Myra church.Attendance is again restricted to two parents with their child. Class teacher, Nora, would like to do some preparation with the children in advance of First Penance and would be grateful if the children could attend school on Friday August 21 and Monday August 24 from 11-12 noon.

The celebration of these sacraments will not be the same as in years past. We understand that you might like to have extended family members in attendance but this is not feasible. On the other hand it seemed very unlikely a few months back that we would be in a position to offer the sacraments this side of the new school year so it is great that we are able to offer this now. We will keep you updated with all developments regarding sacramental preparation. One way to prepare would be to bring your child to a weekly mass. This does not have to be on a Sunday but any weekday. If the children were in school they would be experiencing this procedure each Friday. If you have any concerns or questions please contact the school by email on snndunlavin@gmail.com. Our thanks to the class teachers Ciara Moran, Nora Halpin and to Fr Douglas for making all this possible.
